The way through.
The Passage series emerged from a reflective sabbatical in Pietrasanta, Italy, where I explored the concept of simplicity in life. Inspired by Italian lessons on ‘simplicita’—‘Eat when you’re hungry. Sleep when you’re tired’—I began to distill life’s complexities into its elemental forms. The series draws on the symbolic power of the binary: the upright ‘1’ as a masculine force and the ovular ‘0’ as a feminine portal through which we enter and endure life’s challenges.
As Richard Speer explains in From the Heart: Sculpture by Martin Eichinger, this idea became central to Passage, where ‘the only way out is through.’
The book offers further insight into how this motif took shape during my time in Italy.
